Excellence in Composting

The NaturTech Composting System is an affordable, high-performance, in-vessel, containerized composting system that produces uniform and consistent compost, provides pathogen destruction, odor control, and leachate management.

NaturTech is a composting technology designed

composting operators.

We have combined the state-of-the-art in process control using a Siemens Procidia controller with Internet access along with unique material handling skills developed through twenty-six years of composting experience. Enclosed composting containers and biofilters complete the NaturTech process, enabling optimum composting rates, even in environmentally and politically sensitive locations. NaturTech was not designed to be the lowest cost composting system. Our goal was to achieve the most excellent composting system. After eight years of experience, we have now reduced our costs to as little as one fourth of what they were only a few years ago. An affordable price is the result of simplicity in design and the use of modified intermodal shipping containers.

In the past, operators have moved a mixer through the compost piles, often without knowing why or when to turn a pile. They thought that it was for "aeration", but research demonstrates that a windrow uses up its oxygen in as little as 30 minutes after turning. Knowing that mixing costs money, we decided to move the compost to the mixer, but only when operating data clearly indicates that agitation or homogenization is necessary. In some operations, we have either eliminated agitation or reduced it down to only one turning! By maximizing aeration and initial mix control, NaturTech saves money in operating costs.

Beginning in 1992 with a pilot in Lawrence, Kansas and now with five operational facilities in Mankato, MN, Hutchinson, MN, Puyallup, WA, Cold Spring, MN, and Whidbey Island, WA, the NaturTech system is already getting high praise. In addition, several small communities are evaluating NaturTech for co-composting source separated organics with wastewater treatment biosolids. We have a dozen more facilities in negotiation for food processing byproducts, source separated organics, yard trimmings and bioremediation.

What is NaturTech?

NaturTech is a patented process of composting. Its components include:

Enclosed roll-off or intermodal containers

Centralized mixer, as contrasted with mobile windrow turners

Self-cleaning perforated floors that dump easily, eliminating most aeration floor clogging problems

"Beltsville" and "Rutgers" air delivery for oxygen and temperature control

Computerized process control and monitoring

Modular biofilters for odor control

Why is NaturTech better, cheaper, and faster?

Better...

World-wide service

Process management via remote data retrieval

Compost quality assurance to increase marketing of compost

Containers with lids to contain odors and provide weather protection

No compost buildings or sheds required other than the mixing and tipping areas

Enclosed mixing reduces fugitive dust, odors, and many health concerns

Quickly rechargeable biofilter media if too wet, dry, or inactive

Computerized mixing optimizes bulking material and inoculation

Mobile for decentralized or portable applications

Containers have watertight seals and leachate collection drains

Corrosion resistant coating for long container life

Expandable to meet growth needs or seasonal fluctuations

Cheaper...

Off-the-shelf components

Low depreciation maintains capital value

Computer control reduces labor, reporting made simple

Buildings or hangers are not necessary

Minimal concrete, compost is off the ground

Intermodal containers provide the economics of scale of mass production

No stormwater run-on and run-off concerns - no leachate ponds

Faster...

Proven at University trials to maintain the optimum microbial environment

In-vessel composting achieves pathogen destruction in as little as three days

Windrow systems require at least fifteen days with five turnings for pathogen destruction

Not static like Beltsville or other aerated systems, compost is fully agitated

Periodic remoisturizing and reconditioning optimizes composting

What size would you like?

NaturTech facilities can be sized at four to one thousand tons per day. We provide a full turn-key system with operator training, process monitoring, compost utilization, and regulatory compliance. We can build, bond, lease, and assist in developing facilities throughout North America. If you want a joint venture or contract options, you can work with our affiliate, Renewable Carbon Management.

NaturTech is unique in that it allows for segregation of source separated compost from mixed waste feedstocks, enabling high-end marketing of the best organic raw materials, letting mixed waste compost go to lower value markets, landfill cover, and designated land application sites. We meet the goals of the National Recycling Coalition and US Composting Council hierarchy which calls for source separated composting before other mixed waste management options.

Our containers can also be used for bioremediation of hydrocarbon contaminated soil, right at the same facility. NaturTech biofilter containers can be used to help treat air and reduce smells for any generator of organic odors, not just composting facilities. We also lease biofilters with a regular service and filter media replacement program.

For process and odor control, in-vessel composting and curing, high grade compost and byproducts, the NaturTech process represents the new standard in composting and cost effectiveness. Jim McNelly, the inventor, company founder, and President has been designing and operating composting and biosolids management programs since 1975.

Complete systems start as low as $80,000

Capital and operating costs can be configured as "good, better and best" options to suit any budget
